MIS: How can I see an overview of whole school year-to-date absence by band?

Overview

This article explains how to view a summary of those pupils in your school who are categorised into one of these three bands based on their attendance / absence this academic year:

  • Approaching Persistent - pupils whose absence for the current academic year is between 5% and 10% (attendance is between 90% and 95%)
  • Persistent - pupils whose absence for the current academic year is between 10% and 50% (attendance is below 50% to 90%)
  • Severe - pupils whose absence for the current academic year is above 50% (attendance is below 50%)

By identifying these pupils, you can put the appropriate interventions in place for each of the three groups.

Instructions

From within Juniper MIS:

  1. Select Reports.
  2. Select Attendance.
  3. Select Dashboard and locate the Absence Bandings widget:

Outcome

In the Attendance Dashboard, you can view this week's Absence Bandings (as percentages) and compare them with those of the previous week:

A comparison of each headline figure from the last 7 days against the previous 7 days is displayed under the main headline percentages with either a red or green call out and an up or down arrow. These will help you to track trends more responsively:

  1. Red backgrounds indicate an increase in absence.
  2. Green backgrounds indicate a decrease in absence.
  3. Up arrows indicate an increase in percentage week-on-week, for example, where the first week is 90% and second week is 100%.
  4. Down arrows indicate a decrease in percentage week-on-week, for example, where the first week is 100% and second week is 90%.

All percentages presented are calculated based on total sessions to date, for the school year. Each school day has two sessions per pupil; thus, a school with 200 pupils has 400 sessions daily, 2,000 each week, and, for example, at the end of week five, a total of 10,000 sessions. As updates are made to the data twice a day, the comparison period also moves forward twice a day, to give a rolling week-on-week view.
