MIS: What are the different types of group in Juniper MIS?

Overview

This article explains the three types of groups within the Juniper MIS: Classes, Year Groups and Custom Groups (User-defined Groups in some MIS).

Classes (Class Groups)

Classes are groups of one or more pupils. They can include the staff who work with the pupils and a timetable for their lessons. Classes are generally used for creating:

  • Form groups (also called Registration or Tutor groups).
  • Subject-specific groups, for example, Mathematics, English and Science.

Year Groups

Year Groups are groups of one or more pupils in the same National Curriculum year, for example, Reception, Year 1, and Year 2. They can include the staff who work with the pupils and a timetable.

Custom Groups

Custom Groups are groups of one or more pupils that are used when Year Groups or Classes are not deemed suitable ways of grouping pupils, for example, a group of pupils going on a school trip or participating in an after-school club. They can include the staff who work with the pupils and a timetable for their lessons.

Dynamic Groups

Dynamic Groups are a form of custom pupil groups, created through the All Pupils page by selecting and saving a series of filters. Their contents are updated automatically when used, based on the filters that have been selected for the group. A history of all changes to the group (pupils moving in and out of it) is kept due to the dynamic nature of the group. These groups can be selected as filters from within the Custom Group filter.
