Sonar Tracker: Primary Target and Projection Analysis Report

Sonar Tracker

Overview

This article explains the Primary Target and Projection Analysis Report, detailing its purpose, how to access it, the information it includes, and its controls.

Purpose

The Primary Target and Projection Analysis Report shows how the pupils in the selected Year Group(s) and / or Class(es) are distributed across your school's summative age related expectation (ARE) categories, based on either their targets or their End of Year Projections.

For each selected subject, and for Combined (Reading, Writing and Mathematics), the report shows the percentage and number of pupils in each category, the number of pupils with no target or projection recorded, and a cumulative total of pupils at or above age related expectation. You can select any cell to see exactly which pupils it contains.

You can switch the report between:

  • Target - using either each pupil's Termly Target or their End of Year Target.
  • Projection - using each pupil's End of Year Projection.

Using the report, for each subject you can:

  1. See what proportion of pupils are targeted, or projected, to be working at or above age related expectation.
  2. Compare the distribution of pupils' targets with the distribution of their End of Year Projections.
  3. Identify pupils who do not yet have a target or projection recorded, so that these can be completed.
  4. Identify which pupils are targeted or projected to be working in each category, helping you to plan support, challenge and interventions.
  5. Check whether targets and projections are sufficiently aspirational at a class, group or cohort level.
  6. Use the Combined row to see how many pupils are targeted or projected to be at or above age related expectation in Reading, Writing and Mathematics together.

Opening the page

After selecting the Primary Target and Projection Analysis Report from the Reports page, you will be prompted to choose which pupils you wish to include. Select one or more Year Group(s) and / or Class(es), then select Load Report:

Report View

By default, when the report loads:

  • The current Assessment Period in the current Academic Year is selected.
  • Reading, Writing and Mathematics are selected in Subjects.
  • The report is shown in Target mode, using each pupil's Termly Target.
  • The report description is displayed above the table.

Leavers are not displayed by default (but can be viewed by selecting the appropriate filters). See Sonar Tracker: How do I filter pupils?

Elements

Field Name Description
Pupils Number of pupils who are included in the report (includes those without assessment data).
X Pupils With No Assessment Number of pupils who have no assessment data.
Selected filters A summary of the filters currently applied, separated by |. This always ends with the Assessment Mode in use (for example, Assessment Mode: Target) and, in Target mode, the Target Type (for example, Target Type: Termly Target).
Report description

A short explanation of the report, displayed above the table. It explains that each cell shows the percentage and number of pupils in that category, that the first column counts pupils with no target or projection recorded, that the final column is a cumulative total of pupils at or above age related expectation, and how Combined is calculated.

The description can be hidden using View Options.

Subject One row is displayed for each subject selected in Subjects, followed by a Combined row. Alternate rows are lightly shaded so that you can follow each subject across the table.
Combined Places each pupil in the lowest age related expectation category from their Reading, Writing and Mathematics targets (or projections). For example, a pupil whose Reading and Mathematics targets are at ARE but whose Writing target is below ARE is counted in the below ARE category for Combined.
No Target / No Projection

The first column, headed No Target in Target mode or No Projection in Projection mode, with the description Pupils with no data. This counts the pupils who do not have a target or projection recorded for the subject.

It is separated from the category columns by a small gap.

Summative category columns One column for each of your school's summative age related expectation categories, in order (for example, from Significantly Below to Significantly Above). Each column heading is shaded in the category's colour, and may show a short description beneath the category name.
At +

The final column is a cumulative total of the pupils whose target or projection is at or above age related expectation. It adds together the category columns that count towards age related expectation, and is separated from them by a small gap. For each subject, this is calculated as:

(Pupils in categories at or above ARE ÷ Pupils) x 100

The categories included are listed in the key below the table.

Cell

Each cell shows the percentage of pupils in that category (to one decimal place), with the number of pupils beneath it. For each subject and category, the percentage is calculated as:

(Pupils in category ÷ Pupils) x 100

Hover over a cell to see the column name and the number of pupils out of the total, for example, At +: 18 of 30.

Cells with no pupils are greyed out and cannot be selected. Where no pupils match the filters, - is displayed instead of a percentage.

Pupil names

The names of the pupils in a cell are listed beneath the count when you select the cell, or for every cell when Show pupil names is selected in View Options. Selected cells are highlighted with a purple border:

Key

Displayed below the table:

  • Select one or more cells to show their pupils; select again to hide - a reminder of how to view pupil names (not included when printed or exported).
  • At + = the categories that make up the At + column, using your school's own category names (for example, Just at + Securely at + Above + Significantly above). This is hidden if none of your categories count towards age related expectation.
Messages

Instead of the table, one of the following may be displayed:

  • No pupils match the selected filters. - change your filters to include more pupils.
  • No data available. Select filters and apply. - no data was returned for the current selections.
  • Failed to load report data - the report could not be loaded. Refresh the page and try again.

Controls

Control Description
Filters Select to filter pupils contextually, including their ethnicity. See Sonar Tracker: How do I filter pupils?
Academic Year and Assessment Period

Select the Academic Year and Assessment Period that you want to use when running the report. By default, this is set to the current Assessment Period in the current Academic Year, for example, 2026-2027 Autumn 1.

Schools often choose to align their Assessment Periods to terms, but this is not always the case. The values displayed may differ based on your school's assessment processes.

Subjects Select the subjects that you want to include in the report. You can select more than one. By default, Reading, Writing and Mathematics are selected.
Assessment Mode

Select whether the report analyses pupils' targets or projections:

  • Target (default) - uses the target type selected in Target Type.
  • Projection - uses each pupil's End of Year Projection.

See Sonar Tracker: What's the difference between an End of Year Projection and an End of Year Target?

Target Type

Only available when Assessment Mode is set to Target. Select which targets to analyse:

  • Termly Target (default)
  • End of Year Target
View Options

Select to choose what is displayed under Display:

  • Show pupil names - lists the pupils' names in every cell.
  • Show report description - shows the report description above the table (default).
Cell

Select a cell to list the pupils it contains. Select it again to hide them. You can select as many cells as you need.

Your cell selections are cleared whenever the report reloads, for example, when you change the filters, Assessment Mode or Target Type.

Export

Select to print the report, or export it as either a PDF, Excel or Word file. When Export Report opens:

  1. Select Print, PDF, Excel, or Word, based on what you want to Export as.
  2. For PDF or Word, select Black & white printing if required.

Printed and PDF copies are set to landscape A4, with the column headings repeated at the top of each page. In Excel, each column has a percentage column (%) and a pupil count column (Pupils).

Only what you see on screen is included in the export. Pupil names are only included for the cells you have selected, or for every cell if Show pupil names is selected. Select your filters and display options before you export.

When printing a report, select More settings and decrease / increase the Scale to resize the report so that it fits better onto each page.
