Introduction

This article explains the difference between an End of Year Projection and an End of Year Target.

End of Year Projection

An End of Year Projection is where a pupil is likely to end up. It's a prediction that takes into account a pupil's current and past performance, their past results, the speed at which they are improving, and any teacher assessment.

It is reactive and may change throughout the year. For example, if a pupil works hard, their projection could increase. Meanwhile, if they put in less effort, it could drop.

Consider it as:

End of Year Target

An End of Year Target is what the teacher would like the pupil to achieve by the year-end. It is an aspirational goal that is set at the start of the year. It is based on prior attainment and national expectations, which is intended to stretch the pupil. It doesn’t change easily. It’s the goalpost.

Consider it as:

Difference

The difference is that:

  1. A Projection is the end of year prediction.
  2. A Target is the end of year goal.
