Sonar Tracker: Primary Summative Progress Analysis Report

Sonar Tracker

Overview

This article provides an overview of the Primary Summative Progress Analysis report's purpose, guidance on how to access it, the various types of information it contains, and the different controls that help you customise what you see in the report.

Purpose

The Primary Summative Progress Analysis report helps you spot the small step changes your pupils are making between two points in time, without using the Age Related Expectations (ARE) model.

The report calculates a numerical difference between two assessment periods you select. This gives you clear evidence of progression, regression or maintenance, whether that's between bands or within them. It's especially useful for pupils working outside age related expectations, where the usual ARE view might not tell the full story.

When you run the report, you'll see a tabular and graphical view of your selected group of pupils in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

Each subject is split into Progress Bands: Below Progress, Expected Progress and Above Expected Progress. By default, the report compares the last Assessment Period of the previous Academic Year with the current Assessment Period, so you can see how far your pupils have come.

If any pupils in your selected group don't have assessment data for one or more subjects, you'll see a No Assessments banding for them.

Below the overview table, you'll find a more detailed table listing each pupil, their summative assessment for both periods, and an indicator of the difference in their overall progress.

The difference appears in a white lozenge to improve accessibility. A green background indicates expected performance, for example, At to At. A purple background shows progress above and beyond what's expected, for example, At to Above. A red background with a minus value indicates regression, for example, where a pupil has moved back a step or more, such as Above to At.

If you want to monitor changes in progress using the Age Related Expectations (ARE) model, see the Sonar Tracker: Primary Summative Progress Analysis (ARE) Report.

Elements

Field name Description
X Pupils Number of pupils who are included in the report.
Headline - Expected progress or higher in all subjects This headline figure gives the number of pupils (and percentage) whose progress is at the expected level or higher for all of the subjects that have been selected. The number of pupils is calculated by counting all of those pupils where their progress is at the expected level or above in all subjects. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected who have assessment data (not the total number of pupils).
No assessment This field is only displayed if there are pupils within the selected set who have no assessment data recorded in one of the selected Subjects. It shows a count (and a percentage) of pupils who are without assessment data for the selected Subject. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected who have assessment data (not the total number of pupils).
Below progress The number of pupils (and percentage) whose summative progress is recorded as being below what is expected of them for the Subject displayed. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected who have assessment data (not the total number of pupils).
Expected progress The number of pupils (and percentage) whose summative progress is recorded as being at the level expected for them for the Subject displayed. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected who have assessment data (not the total number of pupils).
Above expected progress The number of pupils (and percentage) whose summative progress is recorded as being above the level expected for them for the Subject displayed. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected who have assessment data (not the total number of pupils).
No assessment in one or more

This field is only displayed if there are pupils within the selected set who have no assessment data or missing assessment data. The field indicates the percentage and number of pupils (displayed in brackets) where no assessment data has been recorded. The percentage is calculated as follows:

No Assessment % =
(Number of pupils with No Assessment data ÷ Total number of pupils) x 100

Note: this percentage is calculated based on the size of the total set (the total number of pupils selected).

Below progress in one or more This field is displayed when Combined is selected. The number of pupils whose summative progress is recorded as being below the expected level of progress for one or more of the Subjects displayed. The number of pupils is calculated by counting all of those pupils where progress is below in one or more subjects. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected (including those with no assessment data).
Expected progress in all This field is displayed when Combined is selected. The number of pupils whose summative progress is recorded as being at the expected level or higher for all of the Subjects displayed. The number of pupils is calculated by counting all of those pupils where progress is at the expected level or above in all subjects. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected (including those with no assessment data).
Above expected progress in all This field is displayed when Combined is selected. The number of pupils whose summative progress is recorded as being above (higher than) the expected level for all of the Subjects displayed. The number of pupils is calculated by counting all of those pupils where progress is above the expected level in all subjects. The percentage is based on the total number of pupils selected (including those with no assessment data).
Subject The name of the subject.
Subject - combined The combined (cumulative) measure for all displayed Subjects.
Name (in the overview table) Name of a pupil who has been recorded as progressing at the level listed for the Subject or Combined subjects.
Name (in the pupil table) The Name of the pupil whose assessment results are being shown in the two Assessment Points.
From academic year and assessment point The pupil's summative assessment for the from (starting) Assessment Point. By default, the From Academic Year and Assessment Point are set at the last Assessment Point in the previous Academic Year. The PITA 4 attainment codes are used when displaying summative assessment.
To academic year and assessment point The pupil's summative assessment for the To (end) Assessment Point. By default, the To Academic Year and Assessment Point are set at the current Assessment Point in the current Academic Year. The PITA 4 attainment codes are used when displaying summative assessment.
Difference

An indicator showing the pupil's progress from the From Assessment Point to the To Assessment Point is displayed.

  • A zero with a green background indicates expected performance, for example, At to At
  • A number with a purple background shows progress above and beyond what's expected, for example, At to Above. The number represents the number of steps increased.
  • A red background with a minus value indicates regression, for example, where a pupil has moved back a step or more, such as Above to At. The number represents the number of steps regressed.

Controls

Control Description
Select to refresh the contents of the report. This is particularly useful if you think that the data may have changed while you were using the report, for example, if someone else added new assessment data during the time you were viewing it.
Filters (1 Active Filter or x Active Filters) The filters control indicates how many filters are currently applied to the data set. Select to contextually filter the pupils.
