Sonar Tracker: Primary Age Related Overview Report

Overview

This article provides an overview of the Primary Age Related Overview report's purpose, guidance on how to access it, the various types of information it contains, and the different controls that help you customise what you see in the report.

Purpose

The Primary Age Related Overview report gives you a clear summary of pupil performance against Age Related Expectations (ARE). Teachers can view class attainment at a glance, while the SLT can analyse attainment across subjects, classes, or year groups. The report highlights which Primary pupils are on track and identifies those needing extra support.

By default, the report covers Reading, Writing, and Mathematics, showing the percentage and number of pupils in each Age Related Expectation category.

You can select multiple Classes across different Year Groups.

The report's Key Performance Indicators provide predicted end-of-year or Key Stage attainment. The first KPI shows the percentage of pupils expected to achieve the standard outcome, while the second shows those on track for the Higher Standard.

When analysing, choose from:

  • Summative Against ARE – Compares pupils' Summative Assessment results with their Age Related Expectations for the selected period.
  • Ages against ARE – Compares pupils' Standardised Age Score with ARE for the selected period.
  • Test scores against ARE – Compares pupils' Test Scores with ARE for the selected period.

You can also view individual subject and pupil outcomes (see Subject Overview).

Pupils without assessment data in Sonar Tracker are excluded from calculations. Percentages use only pupils with data, but the percentage without data is based on the whole cohort.

Opening the page

After selecting the Primary Age Related Overview report from the Reports page menu, you will be prompted to select which pupils you wish to include. Select one or more Year Groups and / or Classes then select Load Report:

Elements

Field Name Description
X Pupils Number of pupils who are included in the report.
Just At or higher in all subjects The percentage and the number of pupils who have been assessed as being on track to achieve the expected outcome (or 100 in the Key Stage 2 Scaled Score) at the end of the Key Stage in Reading, Writing and Mathematics
Above or higher in all subjects The percentage, total number of pupils overall, and the number of pupils who are on track for the higher standard (or 110 in the Key Stage 2 Scaled Score) at the end of the Key Stage in Reading, Writing and Mathematics.

Subject - Combined The combined (cumulative) measure for all displayed Subjects.
Categories

The various Categories (for example, No Assessment, Significantly Below, Below, Just At, Securely At, Above and Significantly Above).

For individual Subjects only (not Combined), select the percentage value within a Category to view the Grade Breakdown slide over that shows all pupils performing at the selected level (see below).

No Assessment

This field is only displayed if there are pupils within the selected set who have no assessment data / missing assessment data. The field indicates the percentage and number of pupils (displayed in brackets) where no assessment data has been recorded. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on the total number of pupils in the cohort selected:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils without assessment data}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}}) \times 100 }} $$

Significantly Below

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils working in a Band associated with a lower Year Group (they're achieving at the level of a lower Year Group than would be expected for pupils in their Year Group). They are accessing appropriate curriculum content and are likely to be categorised as SEN. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Significantly Below}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Below

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils working towards, but currently below their Band, but the Band is within that of their Year Group. They are currently unlikely to achieve the Expected Key Stage standard. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Below}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Just At

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils who are just working at the level of their Age Related Expectation. Pupils who are Just At are on track, and if they continue to progress at the same rate they should achieve the expected standard at the end of the Key Stage, however, they are only just at this level. They may not achieve their Age Related Expectation if, for example, they were to take unexpected time off school. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Just At}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Securely At

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils who are securely working at their Age Related Expectation. If these pupils continue to progress at the same rate, they should achieve the expected standard at the end of the Key Stage. Most pupils will be working at this level. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Securely At}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Above

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils working in a Band above their Age Related Expectation, but within that of their Year Group. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Above}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Significantly Above

This Age Related Expectation indicator shows the percentage and number of pupils working in a Bandabove that which is expected for their Year Group. They are working at the Band of a higher Year Group. It is very rare that pupils are working at this level in a UK school as they are unlikely to be moved into a higher Year Group to be taught a subject. The percentage is calculated as follows, based on only those pupils in the cohort who have assessment data:

$$ \mathsf{\mathbf{ (\frac{\text{Pupils Significantly Above}}{\text{Pupils in cohort}  - \text{Pupils without assessment data}}) \times 100 }} $$

Display Options

Check / uncheck the following to control how the report is presented (expand to find out more):

  • When Summary View is checked, a different view of report data is displayed by the various pupil characteristic groups. For each group the following is displayed:

    • The total number of pupils in the group.
    • The associated percentage of pupils in that group (out of the total number of pupils).

    The pupil characteristic groups are:

    • All Pupils - The total number of pupils.
    • Boys - Pupils that identify as being a boy.
    • Girls - Pupils that identify as being a girl.
    • Disadvantaged - Pupils that have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point over the last six years, have been looked after continuously for at least one day in the last year, or have left care through a formal route such as adoption.
    • Not Disadvantaged - Pupils that are not Disadvantaged.
    • Pupil Premium - Pupils in receipt of Pupil Premium. Pupil Premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England.

    • FSM - Pupils who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). This is a program run by the UK Government to provide free school meals to pupils based their meeting of a set criteria.
    • Not FSM - Pupils that are not eligible for Free School Meals.
    • SEN - Pupils that have any Special Education Need (SEN) provision for example, they need support or have a Statement.
    • Education Health and Care Plan - Pupils that are categorised as SEN and have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) in place. This is a document that defines the needs of a pupil whom extra support is needed in school, beyond that which the school can provide.
    • Not SEN - Pupils that do not have any special education needs.
    • EAL - Pupils where English is an Additional Language (pupils who communicate in a primary language that is not English.
    • Not EAL - Pupils where English is their primary language, not an additional language.
    • Summer Born - Pupils who were born between 1 April and 31 August.
    • Leaver - Pupils who have been flagged as leaving the school.
    • Not Leaver - Pupils who have not been flagged as leaving the school.

This view is useful for governors and also within Pupil Performance Meetings.

An example of the Summary View for this report is shown in the Report View(s) Summary View section above.

  • Check to view the names of the individual pupils whose results make up the totals shown in each of the cells in the report:

When Names has been checked, select a pupil's name within the report to view their Single Pupil Overview report.

By default, Names is not checked.

  • By default, the result shown in each cell relates to that grade / score only. Check Cumulative to see the results of the grades / scores from Just At onwards added to the current value. For example, if you want to view which pupils are Securely At or higher, this will comprise the total pupils in Securely At, Above and Significantly Above). From Just At onwards, the value in each cell includes all the ones above. This is illustrated in the example below for the subject Reading:

  • When checked this value shows the combined measure for all displayed subjects in a new tabular view. The combined values are used to determine how pupils are performing compared to their ARE. For each measure, the total number of pupils are listed. The combined measures are always cumulative. Select each combined value to see a list of those pupils making up the measure. Select a pupil's name to open their Single Pupil Overview.

  • Select to view the Consolidation Opportunities tool in Sonar Tracker. Identifying those pupils who are meeting their Age Related Expectations (ARE) in all but one subject is invaluable as it enables you to determine where extra support can be introduced to help those pupils reach their ARE. You could manually look through the main report name-by-name, subject-by-subject, identifying where this is the case but it would be timely. The Consolidation Opportunities tool will eliminate the need to do this. Instead, for each subject, a total of those pupils who are not meeting their Age Related Expectations in that subject alone are listed:

When the total number is selected, the names of pupils are displayed. You can then use this information to determine where you as the teacher need to put interventions in place to provide extra support to the pupils listed.

In the example above, each column does not show the pupils' current assessment. Instead it shows where the pupils would need to reach in order to consolidate attainment at that measure or higher. Mai-Yuk, for example is Below in Writing, but is on target to achieve her ARE in Reading and Mathematics. There is a consolidation opportunity to put support in place to help Mai-Yuk reach Just At or higher in Writing. A successful intervention would result in Mai-Yuk achieving the expected standard at the end of the Key Stage across all three subjects.

As the teacher, you know the full potential of each pupil in your class, Sonar Tracker doesn't. Sonar Tracker simply saves you time to when identifying possible opportunities.

  • Select to view the Enable Modelling functionality in Sonar Tracker. It is used in conjunction with the Opportunities tool. It allows you to model the potential impact of delivering on one of the displayed Opportunities. When selected, a checkbox is displayed next to the number of pupils (the consolidation opportunity) in the Opportunities table. Check the box to model what would happen if the checked pupils achieve the indicated assessment. The outcomes of the scenario that is being modelled are highlighted in yellow within the report. The modelling tool lets you work through the various options that you have regarding where you can deploy your teaching support resources and the associated impact of that option. This tool is particularly useful when working with limited resources and you are struggling to understand where to best place them to have the highest impact on your class' results.

  • Check to show KPIs, tables and charts separately for each class where multiple classes have been selected, rather than using the default consolidated report view. This will save you time compared to having to run the report several times (once for each class).
  • Check to show the headline Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) associated with the report. By default, this is checked.
  • Check to show the main output of the report in a tabular format. By default, this is checked.
  • Check to show the main output of the report in a graphical format. By default, this is checked.

By default, the following display options are checked (and displayed) when this report is run:

  • KPIs.
  • Overview Table.
  • Chart.
