Juniper Websites: How do I insert or edit an image?

Overview

This article explains how to insert an image and edit it. Good quality, well-cropped images play an important part in communication. Using images that are relevant to the page or news story, enhances the text and engages visitors.

There is usually a 5MB limit when uploading to the file manager. Although uploaded images are compressed, it's a good idea to consider image size before uploading them. This can impact how quickly your page loads and the amount of data used to access it. There are plenty of tools out there that can help you resize your image files before you upload them.

If you have lots of images you'd like to share, consider adding them to an Album within a Gallery and using this to embed a slideshow to your page.

Instructions

  1. Select the content area, where you would like to insert an image.
  2. Select the Edit tab.
  3. Select the Image icon to open the Image Properties window:
    07InsertEditImage.jpg
  4. Select Browse Server to open the File Manager:
    Image Dialog Box
  5. In the File Manager, you can navigate to an already uploaded image or upload a new one into an appropriate folder for embedding on your website.
  6. Select the image within your File Manager.  The File Manager window will close and you will be brought back to the Image Properties window.  The image file path will be updated in the Image URL.
  7. Optional select other Image Properties:
    • Alternative Text -  Used by screen readers.  Describe the image and function of the image on the page.
    • Width -  Reduce or increase the image width on a page. You can set this to either a pixel width by simply entering a number, for example, 300, or to a percentage, for example, 80%.  Setting the width of an image to 100% and leaving the Height blank will allow the image to scale to the full width of the browser window based on the device being used to view the content.
    • Height - Reduce or increase the image height on a page.
    • Lock Ratio - Lock the image ratio so that when the height or width is adjusted, the other dimension will automatically change to maintain the shape and proportion.
    • Reset Size - Reset the height and width back to its original settings.
    • Alignment - Position the image on the page.
    • Captioned Image - Select to enable a caption field directly below the image which can be selected to update when editing the page.
  8. Select OK to close the Image Properties window.

Best practices

  1. Use the table below as a quick guide when selecting images.

    Lower risk Higher risk
    Group activity shots Individual portraits
Distance or wide-angle photos Close-up facial images
Images without uniform or name badges Identifiable uniform or name badges visible
Action shots showing hands or movement Static, posed photos
  2. Use low-resolution images where you can. Low-resolution images are harder to manipulate.
  3. When adding ALT text to images, describe the activity rather than naming individual children, for example, Year 4 science experiment. Ensure that you do not disclose any information, for example, a pupil or staff member's name that makes them easily identifiable.
  4. Review the guidance provided at Protecting your setting’s images from AI manipulation and abuse (UK Safer Internet Centre).
  1. Try not to use images of pupils on their own, or where pupils are clearly identifiable. It is better to use group, activity, or alternative angle photographs where possible.
  2. Ensure there is no meta data attached to your image file (for example, EXIF data) that may reveal location, device details or timestamps.
  3. When using ALT text or labels, ensure that you do not disclose any information, for example, a pupil or staff member's name that makes them easily identifiable.

Outcome

The image will be added to your page.

To edit the Image properties double-click the item on your page. This will re-open the Image Properties window.
