Juniper Websites: How do I get a Google Maps API key?

Overview

This article explains how to get a Google Maps API Key to provide an interactive Google Map on your website.

To enable an interactive Google Map on your school's website, contact us with your Google Maps API Key.

Interactive Google Maps may incur a fee. See https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/pricing/sheet/ and Google’s billing YouTube video for more information.

Instructions

Follow the steps below to obtain a Google Map API and enable it on your school website:

    1. Follow this link to sign up for a Google account if your school does not have one.
    1. Navigate to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
    2. From the Home tab, select Create:
    3. When prompted, enter a Project Name, for example, School Website Google Map:
    4. Select Create to create your project and open it's Dashboard. The dashboard comprises statistical and guidance cards:
  • Follow these steps to enable Maps JavaScript API. This will let you access Google Maps functionality from your website:
    1. From the project dashboard, open the Library page:
      1. Select the hamburger icon to display the menu items.
      2. Hover over APIs & Services in the pop-up menu.
      3. Select Library.
    2. Enter Maps JavaScript API in the Library search box:
    3. Select Maps JavaScript API:
    4. From the Maps JavaScript API Library page, select Enable to activate:
    5. From the Maps JavaScript API page, select Credentials, then Create credentials:
    6. Select API key from the pop-up menu:
    7. Your API key is displayed on screen. Copy the API key and email it to us so that we can provide it to our website developer to add to your site.
    8. Select Restrict Key to lock the key to your school's website:
    9. Within the API keys settings page, scroll down to the Application restrictions
      section.
    10. Select HTTP referrers (web sites) radio button. A textbox will appear, type the schools name in the following format: *schoolwebsite.co.uk/*

      schoolwebsite.co.uk should be your schools actual website address. Ensure that asterisks, full stops and forward slash appear as displayed in the above example.
       
    11. Press Enter on your keyboard.
    12. Do the same for *devwebsite.co.uk/*
    13. If your school has multiple domains, you should complete this process for all domains and Save.
    1. Select the hamburger icon to display menu items.
    2. Select Billing
    3. Select Create billing account
    4. Complete the form and submit your payment details.
    5. Select Start My Free Trial. Google provide $200 free monthly usage for Maps, Routes and Places every month. Google ’s pricing page states that for most users, $200 monthly credit is enough to support their needs.

Outcome

You will have a Google Maps API Key and will have configured a Google billing account.

Fees will be incurred each month when the number of interactions with your map exceeds the threshold stated in Google's pricing.
