On 29th April 2021, Ofsted published its first subject review, focusing on science. This is the first in a series of subject reviews, looking at what constitutes high-quality education across the various curriculum areas.
The review highlights key principles that, according to Ofsted’s research, underpin effective science teaching. These include coherence across scientific concepts, building domain-specific knowledge and expertise, exposing children to key vocabulary from early years onwards, clear explanations by teachers, building on previous knowledge, purposeful practical work and regular, subject-specific CPD.
