Sonar Tracker: How do I assess pupils working within 0-3 years?

Many schools use Development Matters to help design their EYFS curriculum and as a guide when summatively assessing where pupils are working.

The bands used are:

  1. Reception.
  2. 3-4.
  3. 0-3.

When making summative judgements in Sonar Tracker, we advise that these reflect the year group the pupil is working in so where a pupil is working within the 0-3 band, the appropriate year group that best matches where the child is working is used.  The Observation Checkpoints may help as a reference.

Please refer to the following table re the age group that each of the Sonar year groups relates to;

Sonar Year Group Age of pupil Development Matters Band Suggested Observation Checkpoints
Rec  Will be 5 this year Rec
N2  Will be 4 this year 3/4 4 years
N1  Will be 3 this year 0-3 2-3 years
Entry 2  Will be 2 this year  0-3 18 months, 2 years
Entry 1  Will be 1 this year 0-3 6, 7, 12, 15 months
