This article explains how to troubleshoot why Progress 8 scores are showing as a blank (-) in reports as shown below:
There are three steps you should go through to solve the problem:
- Changing the estimates in use.
- Changing the KS2 Baseline Type in use.
- Check that the KS2 Baselines are set up correctly with no warning icons.
Blanks indicate a discrepancy between KS2 Core Baselines set up for the cohort and the Attainment 8 Estimates that are selected. The set of estimates selected must use the same KS2 Baseline Type that are used with the cohort. Additionally, KS2 Core Baselines must be set up correctly with no warning icons. If there are warning icons, the Baselines cannot be used to calculate Progress 8.
If you are working with 2024/25 and 2025/26 cohorts, these students were not awarded Scaled Scores at KS2. As a result, Progress 8 will not be available (unless your Sisra Administrator has uploaded a conversion for Scaled Scores). See Sisra Analytics: Why is Progress 8 or SPI not calculating for Current Year 11 and Year 10 (2024/25 and 2025/26)? for more information.
Select the steps below to find out more:
-
If the cohort's selected KS2 Baseline Type is correctly set to Scaled Scores, republish your Grades datasets to use a set of estimates in line with this.
To republish a dataset with a different set of estimates:
- Select DATA > KS3/4 > select Cohort.
- Select Publish Grades.
- Either:
- Select the Year tab for the corresponding assessment collection you want to republish
- Or select the Data Sets tab to republish a standalone dataset (for example, Exams, Targets, and
-
Select Publish next to the dataset you'd like to republish:
- In the Publish Window select the correct set of Attainment 8 and Value Added estimates for the cohort, dependent on their selected KS2 Baseline Type.
-
For cohorts using Scaled Scores, the estimates available are the 2024, through to 2021 Collab - Exams Attainment 8 and Value Added Estimates.
For 2022/23 Leavers, you should publish with 2023 A8 and VA Estimates as those are the official estimates for that cohort provided by the DfE. For all current cohorts, you may want to publish with the latest 2024 Collab - Exams estimates until updated official estimates become available.
-
For cohorts using NC Fine Levels, the A8 and VA Estimates available are 2020 Collab - Exams and earlier. You should select the year relevant to the cohort you're working with. For example, for 2018/19 Leavers, you should use 2019 A8 and VA Estimates:
-
- Select Publish to publish the dataset. For more information, see Sisra Analytics: KS3/4 - Publish Grades: Data Sets and Assessments (Admin).
-
All cohorts from 2020/21 Leavers onwards were awarded Scaled Scores at KS2, and not NC Fine Levels. Before the release of the DfE's official 2023 A8 Estimates, however, schools had the option to use the Baseline Override function to publish using 2019 or earlier estimates, which were mapped to NC Fine Levels instead.
Following the release of these updated estimates, we recommend using estimates based on Scaled Scores when publishing the reports.
When using scaled scores:
- Ensure you have uploaded your cohort's current KS2 Scaled Scores into DATA > KS3/4 and cohort > KS2 / EAP > Uploads. See Steps 1 and 2 of Sisra Analytics: KS3/4 - Preparing & Uploading KS2 Core Baselines (Admin) for further guidance.
- In KS2 / EAP > Data Collaboration, make sure that Override expected KS2 Baseline is unchecked (switched off):
- In KS2 / EAP > Baselines, ensure your Scaled Scores are set up correctly, and that in the Core column these are set to Maths and English Reading. See Steps 3 of Sisra Analytics: KS3/4 - Preparing & Uploading KS2 Core Baselines (Admin) for further guidance.
- Republish in KS2 / EAP > Publish KS2 / EAP.
- Republish in GRADES > Publish Grades. Make sure the latest Attainment 8 and Value Added Estimates available are selected (or if you're working with a leavers cohort, the estimates relevant to that particular year).
-
If there are any warning icons next to your KS2 Core Baselines (Scaled Scores or Fine Levels) in KS2 / EAP > Baselines, these may prevent your Progress 8 figures from appearing in the Reports.
See Sisra Analytics: KS3/4 - Baseline Management: Warning Icons for more information.
