Overview
This article explains what to do if a student's VA (Value Added) score is missing or does not appear in VA reports. It details the most common reasons why VA is not showing for a student, including an overview of DfE inclusion rules, missing KS4 Core Baselines, incorrect Student Status, or qualifications that aren’t eligible for VA calculation.
Eligibility criteria
If a student has no Value Added (VA) score or VA points it can be for a number of reasons. A student may not have any Value Added if they don't meet the DfE's Headlines inclusion criteria.
If they do meet the criteria:
- They may not have KS4 Core Baselines uploaded
- Or their Student Status could be set to disallow counting towards Headlines figures.
If they have all of the above and don't count, they may not have taken any eligible qualifications that count in Value Added.
-
The criteria is as follows
"Students are eligible to be included in 16 to 18 performance measures if they are of academic age 16, 17, 18 at the start of the 2023 to 2024 academic year (31 August 2023) and at the end of their 16-18 studies. They are identified as being at the end of 16-18 study when they first meet at least one of the following criteria:
a) they have entered for at least 2 qualifications, each of which is at least the size of an A level or they have entered for at least 1 qualification the size of at least 2 A levels, in the reporting year;OR
b) they have entered for both a T Level core and T Level occupational specialism during 16 to 18 study (T Level measures are not yet published on CSCP, but this rule is already applied to produce a normal cohort when reporting on CSCP begins, and to ensure other student cohorts that are published on CSCP are correct),
OR
c) they are 18 at the start of the reporting year and have not been reported in 16 to 18 performance measures at their current allocated school or college.
Prior to 2021, we also used a third inclusion rule where a student would be triggered for inclusion if they had been allocated to the same school or college for the last two years. We have removed this criteria to reduce the burden on schools and colleges where large numbers of students complete 16 to 18 study in their third year."
Instructions
Follow these steps to troubleshoot:
-
Step 1 - Check if the student meets the Headlines Inclusion Criteria
- Go to REPORTS.
- Select KS5.
-
From the KS5:
- Select Cohort.
- Select Data Set.
- Select Students.
- Scroll down and select the student whose not counting towards the VA figures.
- From the Student Detail report:
- Select the Detailed Overview tab
- Check to see if the student has met sections a) or b) of the DfE criteria above:
- If this student hasn't met either of these criteria, they are not eligible to count in Headlines, and therefore will not show any Value Added figures.
-
If they have met one of these criteria, move to 6.
A student needs two individual grades each worth 1 entries, this doesn't count if the sum total of their entries is greater than 2. For example, a student who achieves 1 A Level grade worth 1 entry and 2 AS Level grades each worth 0.5 entries, they would not meet criteria a), as they need 2 grades each at least 1 entry in size.
- Select the Student Information tab:
- Check to see if the student's Student Status is Guest:
- If a student's Student Status is Guest , the student does not count in any Headlines figures, includingg Value Added.
- If the student doesn't have a Student Status of Guest, continue to Step 2.
-
Step 2 - Check if this student has KS4 Core Baselines imported
A students will only count in Value Added figures if they have KS4 Prior Attainment imported to KS4 / EAP > Core Baselines:
- Select DATA.
- Select KS5.
- Select Cohort.
- Select KS4 / EAP.
-
Select Core Baselines:
- Scroll down to the student and check that they have both a KS4 APS GCSE and a KS4 APS All imported:
- If this student doesn't have these KS4 Prior Attainments but should do, select the pencil icon in the Actions column and add these in manually. For more information see Sisra Analytics: KS5 - Where to find Core Baselines (Admin) guide.
- If the student has both of these KS4 Core Baselines, move on to Step 3.
-
Step 3 - Check if the qualifications this student has taken are eligible to count in Value Added
Only approved Academic (GCE and Other Academic), Applied General, and Tech Level qualifications are eligible to count towards Value Added figures. To check whether the qualifications the student has taken are eligible qualifications:
- Select DATA.
- Seelct Key Stage 5.
- Select Cohort.
- Select Grades.
- Select Grades Management.
- Select Manage Students.
-
Select the student who hasn't been included and make a note of the qualifications that they have grades for:
- Select National Data:
- Scroll down the Value Added Data and check the qualifications this student has taken:
- If the qualifications are not present on this page, then they are not eligible to count in Value Added, for example, if they are Unapproved, or Tech Cert qualifications.
- If the qualifications are present on this page, but are showing as empty rows, then there is no VA data for this qualification in this VA year. If you've ensured that the most up-to-date VA Data is selected on this page (at the time of writing 2024 Revised), then it may be that this qualification was not approved to count in that year for Value Added.
- If the qualifications are present on this page and have rows of VA Data, contact us.
