MIS: What are the different group categories and types?

Overview

This article explains the different Group Categories (Core, Academic, Events and Custom) and related Types selected when creating / editing Groups.

Categories

Category Description Associated Types
Core Used for the pastoral structuring of pupils, for example, based on when they enter the school, their Year Group and House.

Academic Used for structuring pupils into Groups based on the subjects that they are studying, or for structuring members of staff based on which part of your organisation they report into.

Custom Used for defining Groups that do not naturally fit into any of the Types within the Core, Academic and Events Categories.
  • Custom Group
  • User Group
Events Used for structuring pupils into Groups based on extra-curricular activities, or for structuring members of staff who attend specific meetings, such as SLT (Senior Leadership Team) or Governor meetings.

Types

Category Type Use to group / Description
Core Academic Year
  • Pupils by academic year.
Admission Group
  • One or more pupils based on when they will be added to your school role, for example, Autumn 2025, and Spring 2026.
Year
  • Pupils by year group, for example, Year 5.
Form
  • Pupils and staff into form / registration groups.
House
  • Pupils and staff into house groups.
Boarding House
  • Pupils and staff into house groups within a boarding school.
Academic Faculty
  • Pupils and staff by faculty.
Department
  • Pupils and staff by department.
Subject
  • Pupils and staff by a specific subject.
Course
  • Pupils and staff by a specific course.
Teaching
  • Pupils and staff by teaching group.
Events Club
  • Pupils and staff involved with a specific club, for example, an after-school sport club.
Trip
  • Pupils who are going on a school trip, for example, a field trip to a local museum.
  • Staff who will be leading / supervising the trip. 
Wraparound Care Group
  • Primary school-aged pupils who partake in before and after-school childcare, for example, breakfast clubs or after-school clubs.
  • Staff who supervise / run the sessions.
Meeting
  • Staff attending meetings, for example, those attending leadership meetings or focus group meetings.
Intervention
  • Pupils who may benefit from a specific intervention, for example, additional support in a subject.
  • Staff leading / supporting the interventions.
Custom Custom Group
  • Use when setting up a custom group for use within the system (for example, for reporting), that is not related to system management / administration.
User Group
  • Use when setting up a custom group for system user management / administration purposes.
