Overview
This article explains how to create a new user role with a unique set of permissions. This is particularly useful for controlling a user's access to content or functionality based on their need. By default, there are three user roles - Administrator, Publisher and Writer (see Juniper Websites: What are the different user roles?), but this functionality enables you to create custom user roles.
Prerequisites
You must be an Administrator to create new user roles.
Instructions
To create a new role:
- Select User Manager from the Home tab:
- Select Create New Role from the Common Tasks column:
- Enter the details for the role (required fields are marked with an asterisk):
- Select Choose Permissions to open the permissions window:
- Work through the various permission sets, granting the required permissions to the new role. New roles, by default, will have View Only access. This will mean that users associated with that role, will not be able to update content on your website. To change the Permission Sets:
- Locate and select the required feature in the Permissions Set (left) column, for example, Page:
- Set each permission to Allow or Deny, depending on what access you wish this role to have:
Not Set is the same as Deny but it is automatically selected by default.

- Select Add Role to save your new role to the User Manager:
When setting the permissions for File Manager, the Constrain to user folder permission is set to ALLOW by default. Users within this role can't access all the website folders. This includes, for example, the folder used to update slideshow images. The user will be constrained to using only their personal folders. If you want to grant users within a role access to all folders, set Constrain to user folder as DENY or NOT SET:
Outcome
The Role is created. When creating new users, you can select the Role. You may also want to allocate the Role to a page to secure it - a user with the appropriate role will need to login to view the page's content.
