Juniper Websites: How can I make images accessible in my website?

Overview

Images/pictures are a visual tool, but if they add value for a visitor to your page, the value should be shared with everyone. This article provides information that will help ensure that several types of images included in your website are accessible:

    1. Slideshow images - These images at the top of your pages, are decorative and don't provide any useful context about the content.
    2. Content images - These are the images that you add to the content area of your pages. They usually add value to the text.
    3. Custom features with images.
    4. News and Blog Thumbnails.

Instructions

  • You don't need to do anything to ensure the accessibility of slideshow images. They have been labelled appropriately so they won't interfere with screen readers.

  • When adding a content image to your site or when you are reviewing your existing content images check to see that they:

    1. Are fit for purpose and add value.
    2. Do not contain too much text. Images that contain large amounts of text are hard to read for sighted visitors and impossible for someone who is visually impaired to read. Ideally, the wording from the image should be added to the page content. You may want to consider whether it could be added as a document attachment if it originated, for example, as a PDF.
    3. Include Alternative Text. This explains what each image on your website is. You can do this when you add an image, or add it to an existing image as follows:
      1. Right-click the image.
      2. Select Image Properties:
      3. Enter your Alternative Text:
      4. Select OK.
    4. Save your changes.
  • If you have any custom features that require an image to be set, for example, Homepage Image Quicklinks, ensure that alternative text is entered in the Custom Data settings for that feature.

  • When you create a news article or blog post set a thumbnail image, to engage your visitors and help them pick out the different articles.  Make sure you set Alternative Text for thumbnail images too, to make sure your news items are accessible, wherever they appear on your site.
