Sonar Tracker: How can I identify pupils who require interventions?

Overview

This article explains how you can use Sonar Tracker to identify pupils who may benefit from interventions using one or more of the following reports:

  • Subject Overview.
  • EYFS (2020) Quadrant or Primary Quadrant.
  • EYFS (2020) Assessment Conversion Matrix or Primary Assessment Conversion Matrix.

These reports should not be used in isolation to determine where interventions may help pupils achieve their potential. Consider factors like whether the pupil has a special educational need, their previous key stage outcomes and previous summative assessments. For instance, a pupil who is Below but has made significant progress may not benefit from an intervention, while another Below pupil with little progress might.

Using the Subject Overview report to identify possible interventions

  1. Select Reports.
  2. Scroll down the page and select the Subject Overview report:
  3. When prompted, select the Year Group and/or Class to use for identifying pupils who may benefit from interventions:

  4. Select the Subject you are interested in:
  5. Select the arrows below the Summative heading for your latest assessment results to rank the results:
  6. Review the pupils at the top of the list who are Below (in Red) and Just At (in Yellow) the age-related expectation. This is your starting point for identifying those who may benefit from an intervention. Remember, it's not just about their status as Below or Just At; use your judgement based on your knowledge of each pupil.

Using the Quadrant report to identify possible interventions

These instructions show you how to use either the EYFS (2020) Quadrant report or Primary Quadrant report to identify pupils who may benefit from interventions:

  1. Select Reports.
  2. Scroll down the page and select the appropriate Quadrant report:
  3. When prompted, select the Year Group and/or Class to use for identifying pupils who may benefit from interventions:
    mceclip0.png
  4. Select the Subjects you are interested in viewing in the report:
  5. Review the pupils on the left-hand side of the quadrant - those pupils whose progress is below expectation, regardless of whether their attainment is recorded as are or are not on track to meet their ARE. Select the percentage value to view the individual pupil names:
  6. Initially, look at the pupils in the top left corner of the quadrant. They are on track for their age, but their ARE has decreased from the first to the second period. For instance, a pupil's ARE might be Above their age-related expectation in the first period but has dropped to At in the second. Use your knowledge of each pupil in addition to this information to determine if they would benefit from an intervention.
  7. After reviewing the top left corner of the quadrant, move your attention to the bottom left corner. These pupils are underperforming and below their ARE. Use your understanding of each pupil alongside this data to assess if they would benefit from intervention.

Using the Assessment Conversion Matrix to identify possible interventions

  1. Select Reports.
  2. Scroll down the page and select the appropriate Assessment Conversion Matrix:
  3. When prompted, select the Year Group and/or Class to use for identifying pupils who may benefit from interventions:

  4. Select the Subjects you are interested in viewing in the matrix:
  5. Review those pupils making Expected progress (target group) and those making Less than expected progress as a starting point to determine who may benefit from an intervention. Use your understanding of each pupil alongside this data to assess if they would benefit from intervention. Select the values in the appropriate yellow and red cells to view the pupils in each cell:

Outcome

These reports and your knowledge of individual pupils will help you identify those who may benefit from interventions. The Assessment Conversion Matrix is a great visual tool to use when discussing progress with individual pupils.
