Extracting Grades or AtL Data from your MIS
The first step towards uploading grades or AtL data into Analytics is to extract this for the cohort from your schools’ MIS.
To help you do this, we provide links to helpful resources or report definition files for popular MIS’ such as SIMS, Arbor, Bromcom and iSAMS. These can be found in the following article - Sisra Analytics: How do I extract data from my MIS? (Admin).
Each set of grades data (e.g. Targets, Mocks, Spring assessment, etc.) would need to be uploaded in a separate file.
Preparing Grades Data
Once you have extracted grades data from your MIS, you should ensure all the following information is included within the Excel file:
- Student ID
- Student Name
- Qualification/Subject
- Grade/Level/Judgement
This information can either be in a Broadsheet format, where each qualification is shown in separate columns, or a Grade List format, where all grades are listed in the one column. Examples of these formats are explained further below:
- Broadsheet – A grades broadsheet displays qualifications / subjects along the top, students down the left and grades / levels scattered across the sheet (as shown in the example below).
Grades files in this format should be uploaded using the 'Broadsheet' upload type.
- Grade List – A grade list can contain any number of columns, but each student's grade will be shown in the same column (as shown in the example below).
Grades files in this format should be uploaded using the 'Grade List' upload type.
| Your file would need to be saved in Excel in any of the following formats: .csv .xlsx .xls .xml |
Uploading to Analytics
Once your grades (or AtL) file is saved to Excel on your PC in any of the above formats, this can then be immediately uploaded to Analytics.
To do this, go to DATA > Select Key Stage & Cohort > GRADES > Uploads, then select the relevant dataset, or the 'Assessments' area for Assessment Collections.
When you create a new assessment collection or select the EAP Term and Grade Type in a Standalone dataset, you can then click Upload Grade File to begin the upload process.
You are presented with two upload type options: Broadsheet and Grade List. Select the relevant option based on the format of your file, and follow the steps on screen to complete the upload.
Once a grade file upload has been completed, you can then import an AtL Judgement file alongside this if necessary, by clicking the relevant tab under the 'Attitude to Learning' heading.

Issues Uploading Grades Data
Below is a list of issues that can be identified in the File Health Check when uploading a grades file:
- If the student ID doesn’t contain a number
- If the student name contains a number
- If the student ID is not recognised, or a student does not have any student data
- If a student has conflicting grades for a qualification (2 or more grades in the same qualification)
- If a student has incomplete data
- The cell exceeds maximum length in characters
- The column cell name is blank e.g. “Student Name is blank”
If any of the above issues are flagged while uploading data, you should cancel the upload and check your file to resolve these issues, then try the import again. Further information on File Health Check issues is available in the following guide: Uploading Grades - File Health Check Issues.
