This article covers uploading grades data into the appropriate data sets within Analytics, including Exams and other grades, for example, Targets and Mocks. Analytics accepts grades files saved as CSV, XLSX, XLS or XML within Excel.

Uploading Assessments? If you're uploading Assessment grades, please see - Uploading Assessment Grades (Admin) |
The screenshots below use KS3/4 as an example, however the steps are the exact same for KS5.
Uploading a standalone grades file
To upload your file, click DATA > select key stage and cohort > GRADES > Uploads.
To upload official banked exam grades, click ‘Exams’ on the left.
To upload grades into a standalone data set, select one of your additional data sets, such as Targets, Mocks, Data Set 3, Data Set 4, or Data Set 5. Each of these data sets can contain one full set of grades at a time.
Then, select an EAP term, which should reflect when the data relates to or when it was collected. This controls the expected grades used for ‘on track’ analysis in the reports (if expected grades have been entered into your EAPs for that cohort). In KS3/4, this will also determine which grade method each qualification will use and whether KS3 or KS4 classes will be pulled through to the reports for those students. The Exams data set will automatically be set to the ‘KS4 or KS5 Exams’ term.
Next, from the options available in the Grade Type drop down, select what type of grade data you will be uploading into the data set, e.g. End of Key Stage Targets, Attainment, Predicted etc. This is important if your school is part of a trust which uses the Juniper Insights MAT Dashboard. Note: The Exams data set is automatically set to Exams.
Then, click ‘Upload Grade File’.
You will then be asked to select the relevant upload type, based on what format your Excel file is currently in. The two upload types are Broadsheet and Grade List, and both of these formats are individually explained further on.
| Broadsheet |
Grade List |
|
Used for files which have qualifications/subjects in separate columns, students down the left, and grades scattered throughout.
|
Used for files where the grades are contained in a single column. This may be useful if your file contains additional columns.
|
-
Uploading from Broadsheet
If your file is a Broadsheet, you will need to first select the row which contains the titles of each subject. In the majority of cases this will be row '1', but you should check this in your file to make sure.
Next, choose your file, then enter the relevant Date based on around the time when the grades were collected. (In KS3/4, this is important to allow for first-entry discounting in the event of subsequent grade file uploads to this dataset).
Then, enter a clear file title to identify the contents of the upload (this will only be visible in DATA to allow you to distinguish between your files), and click Upload.
You will then be taken to the Column Mapping - Grade Data screen:
On this page, you should ensure the Student ID and Student Name columns are correctly mapped, then select the first and last qualification columns, based on your file.
Once all columns are mapped correctly, click Continue with the Upload.

Uploading from Grade List
If your file has each score in a single column, you would use the Grade List option.
On this page, you should ensure the Student ID and Student Name columns are correctly mapped, then select the columns containing the Qualification Name, and the Grade/Level.
Once all columns are mapped correctly, click Continue with the Upload.
Completing the Upload
During the upload process, Analytics will perform a file health check, which will inform you of issues found in the file. We recommend checking this, as well as checking the number of students and qualifications listed in the upload summary are as you expect for this file.
| If there are issues, then you can view further details by clicking ‘Show/Hide Warnings’. You can click ‘Cancel the upload’, address the issues and then re-upload the amended file. For more information on these potential issues, see here - Uploading Grades - File Health Check Issues (Admin). |
However, if you are happy with the file (or want to address issues in Analytics where possible) and you have checked the upload summary, click ‘Continue with the upload’
If no issues have been found, click ‘Continue with the upload’.
Confirm Upload Qualification Names
When uploading subsequent grade files containing qualifications that have not been uploaded previously for that cohort, the Confirm Upload Qualification Names page will prompt you to merge these with existing qualifications or create these as new qualifications.
If the qualification you’re uploading grades for has not been uploaded before for that cohort and is therefore new, select “New” in the SISRA Qualification dropdown.
However, if this qualification exists for the cohort, but has been named slightly differently on your Matching page compared to your file, you can merge these together by selecting the appropriate qualification from the SISRA Qualification dropdown.
Once you have completed the selections for all qualifications shown, click ‘Complete the upload’. Any new qualifications will need to be set up on the Matching page.
You will then be taken to the Uploads page for that data set, where you can manage your file. Here you can export your grades list to Excel, edit the title or date of your file, see a preview of the files contents, or permanently delete the file.
If you’re working with grades that include L2 qualifications in KS5, these can also be uploaded alongside the student’s assessment/exam grades.

Note: It is not possible to create any further standalone datasets. If you have no spare datasets available for further uploads, and you are unable to replace any previous grade files, please take a look at the following article for further guidance: FAQ: I've run out of datasets to upload grades into, what should I do?
