  • Updated

Welcome to our step by step guide for being able to view your website statistics within your Primarysite Website.

In this guide we will cover:

This document will help you achieve this in an easy step by step process. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Please note we do not offer an Ofsted alert service. Juniper Education, however, takes a more proactive approach when it comes to supporting schools with website compliance.

We have written an article that outlines our stance and reasoning for not offering or developing this feature which can be found here

Getting Started

Firstly, you will need to log into your website. This may be done by either clicking a padlock icon or it could be that the words ‘log in’ are situated on the homepage, either in a corner or at the bottom of the page.

A log in screen will then appear, for your details.

As default only, all users of the website will have the permission to view the website statistics.

Your website statistics, can be used as a tool to help the way you communicate with your parents and the wider community. In this area, you will be able to see which pages within your website are visited the most and also at what times of the day your website see’s the most traffic.

How to Access and View your Website Statistics

When you are logged in to the school’s website, go to the admin tab on the white bar along the top of the website and click the ‘website statistics’ button.

You will then be taken to the below screen, where you will see an overview of your visitor activity.

In this area, you will have the ability to pick specific date ranges should you wish from the date range drop down. This could be the current academic year, term or last time you added content to the website.

Once your date range has been selected you will see how many visitors you have had over that time period. This will display like the image below

You will also have the option in this area to export your data in a multitude of file types. To do this you will need to click the ‘arrow’ icon under the visitor chart and select your file type you wish to export to from the drop down, this will then save to your PC/device.

You can also add notes to your findings by clicking the ‘speech bubble’ button next to the export file button. This will then bring up a free text field for you to type your notes, click the red ‘save’ button to then save your notes. This can be useful if you are looking to drill down further into your website views and help spot trends, notes can be kept as a reference to your findings.

Lastly in this overview area you can plot further metrics onto your date range graph, by hovering over the ‘graph’ icon button. This will then show a list of further information that can be plotted to your graph.

Click the information you wish to display, you will then see this plotted against your visits, this can be useful for spotting trends in your website views.

The above example shows visits, bounce rate and page views for the date range of 01/11 – 07/11.

Popular Pages

In the popular pages section of your website statistics, you will be able to see which pages are being viewed the most within your website. This will help to inform you what information parents are visiting the website for. You will also be able to tell which of your pages are least visited, could this be due to information being out of date or the page being hard to find.

Primarysite can also advise that seeing a spike on certain pages, an example may be visiting your statutory information or a page which may be looked at for inspection, could be that Ofsted are having a look, a potential indication of an upcoming inspection. This will only be applicable to schools which fall under the Ofsted umbrella, and is by no means an exhaustive answer to spikes, it is what our schools have said to us previously.

To view your popular pages, once in the website statistics area, click the second tab along.

You will then see the above screen which will list your page titles and the amount of hits each page has received, broken down by the below headings. Again you have the option to alter your date ranges.

Page views – The number of times a page has been viewed.

Unique page views – Shows the number of individuals that have viewed the page.

Bounce rate – The number of users who came straight to that page and then left your website.

Avg. time on page – Average amount of time visitors spend viewing that page.

Exit rate – This is the last page of the site visitors looked at before leaving your website.

Avg. generation – Time it takes for the webpage to load.

If you hover over a row, you will see the option to expand on the data by clicking on the below icons.

The first icon will open your transitions. This allows you to see what visitors did before and after viewing this page. You will need to scroll down the page once selected to see the data, this will display like the below. You have the option to expand sections further by clicking the blue ‘+’ buttons on either side.

The second icon will open your row evolution. This allows you to see how the metrics for the row have changed over time, you will need to scroll down the page once selected to see the data. This will display as per the below.

Clicking the ‘pick a row to compare’ button allows you to compare the same data from a different page within the website and will again show as the above.

Visitors by Time and Location

In the visitors by time section of your website statistics, you will be able to see the most popular times of day that people visit your website.

To view your visitors by time, once in the website statistics area, click the third tab along. You will then see the below screen. Again you have the option to alter your date ranges.

Clicking the bar chart icon highlighted above, allows you to change the visualisation of the data to one of the below drop-down options. You can also export the data into various files types using the export button. This is located next to the bar chart icon, highlighted above.

In the visitors by location section of your website statistics, you will be able to see which countries people have viewed your website from.

To view your visitors by location, once in the website statistics area, click the fourth tab along. You will then see the below screen. Here you have the option to alter your date ranges.

Clicking the country and visit drop downs on the right-hand side of the map, allows you to drill down further into how many visitors you have had per country and by their actions per visit.

Clicking a country or visit action will then zoom you in on the map to that area. You can then hover over the different countries displayed to be given your breakdown.

Real Time Map

In the real time map section of your website statistics, you will be able to see your visits to your website in real time.

To view this information, once in the website statistics area, click the fifth tab along. You will then see the below screen.

The yellow dots will show the location of visitors on your website at that moment in time. Clicking the yellow dots will then provide you with a visitor profile for that person which will look like the below.

Google Analytics

The integrated statistics on your site do not offer an alert service for certain visitor patterns

You could consider setting up these features using Google Analytics. If you create an account there and provide us with the necessary code, we can help integrate it into your site. However, as Ofsted is aware of this practice, they will understandably make every effort to avoid triggering such alerts.
