Juniper Websites: How do I add alternative (ALT) text to an image?

Overview

This article explains how to add alternative (ALT) text to an image in your Juniper Website, to provide a brief description of the image. This is displayed when the image cannot be loaded or is not visible to the user. It is good practice to add ALT text to images to enhance the accessibility of your site - the ALT text is read by screen readers for users with visual impairments, to help them understand the image's content and purpose.

Instructions

Follow these steps to add ALT text to an existing image:

  1. Locate the image in your website:
  2. Double-click on the image to open the Image Properties:
    1. Enter the Alternative Text (see section below for best practices when writing ALT text):
    2. Select OK.
  3. Save your changes (see Juniper Websites: What do the different save options mean?)

Tips for writing good ALT text

  1. Be concise but descriptive. Describe what the image is showing in a simple, straightforward way.
  2. Don’t say image of or picture of. Screen readers already announce that it's an image.
  3. Only include relevant keywords. Avoid keyword stuffing.
  4. Ignore decorative images. If an image is purely decorative, it’s better to leave the ALT text empty, so that screen readers can ignore it.

Outcome

The ALT text is added to the image.

When you add images to your website, to save time, ensure you add the ALT text, rather than adding it afterwards, as explained in this guide.
