Sisra Analytics: KS3/4 - How is KS2 Banding determined?

Overview

This article explains Sisra Analytics determines KS2 Banding using Average Scaled Scores and National Curriculum Levels in Sisra Analytics. This can help with troubleshooting figures and provides insight into the calculations.

Banding calculations for Scaled Scores

  • Sisra Analytics determines a student's KS2 Banding using the average of the KS2 Scaled Scores for subjects nominated as Core by your school's Sisra Administrator. The Core subjects are nominated as the DfE can change them annually.

KS2 Bands using Average Scaled Scores

The KS2 Bands using Average Scaled Scores in Sisra Analytics are follows:

Banding KS2 Average Scaled Score Band Boundaries
Upper / High Average Scaled Score is equal to, or greater than 110.
Middle Average Scaled Score is equal to, or greater than 100 but less than 110.
Lower Average Scaled Score is less than 100

The boundaries stated above are taken from the DfE's Secondary Accountability Guidance.

    Core Subjects

The Core subjects currently used for cohorts are English reading and Maths.

    Average Scaled Scores calculation

The Average Scaled Scores calculation is:

Average Scaled Scores  = (English reading Scaled Score + Maths Scaled Score)  ÷ 2

The Average Scaled Scores is compared to the KS2 Average Scaled Score Band Boundaries to determine a student's KS2 Band.

The DfE have confirmed that rounding does not apply when calculating the bands. For example, a student with an average of 109.5 would fall into the Middle band. A student with 99.5 would fall into the Lower band.

  • Example

    A student has:

    • An English reading Scaled Score of 116.
    • A Maths Scaled Score of 98.

    Average Scaled Scores  = (116 + 98)  ÷ 2 = 107
The student is in the Middle band, as they have an average of more than 100 but less than 110.

Banding calculations for NC Levels

  • KS2 Bands using NC Levels

The KS2 Bands using NC Levels in Sisra Analytics are follows:

Banding KS2 Average NC Level Band Boundaries
Upper / High Average KS2 above Level 4 (Above 30 points)
Middle Average KS2 at Level 4 (Between 24 and 29.99 points)
Lower Average KS2 below Level 4 (Below 24 points)

The boundaries stated above are taken from the DfE's Defining Low, Middle and High Attainers’ document.

    Core Subjects

As per DfE guidance, the Core subjects used each year for cohorts using NC Fine Levels are:

Progress 8 measure by year KS4 Cohort KS2 Cohort KS2 tests used in calculating prior attainment fine level bands
    2016 2011 English and Mathematics.
    2017 2012 Reading and Mathematics.
    2018 2013 Reading and Mathematics.
    2019 2014 Reading and Mathematics.

    Average NC Fine Levels calculation

The Average NC Fine Levels calculation is:

Average NC Fine Levels  = (English or English reading Fine Level depending on year + Mathematics Fine Level) ÷ 2

The Average NC Fine Levels is compared to the KS2 Average NC Level Band Boundaries to determine a student's KS2 Band.

  • Example

    In 2018/2019 a student has:

    • An English Reading Fine Level of 5.77.
    • A Mathematics Fine Level of 4.87.

    Average NC Fine Levels  = (5.77 + 4.87)  ÷ 2 = 5.32
The student is in the Upper / High band, as they have an average above a Level 4.

If your banding appears incorrect in the Reports, speak to your school's Sisra Analytics Administrator.
