- The number of pupils across your Trust achieving a score of 20/25 or greater for their Multiplication Tables Check.
- The number of pupils across your Trust achieving a score of 25 for their Multiplication Tables Check.
Details of the statutory data eligibility rules that govern these measures are provided in a sub-section below. This will help you to understand which pupils are included in these measures and how they are calculated.

Phonics statutory data eligibility rules
The following rules apply to determining which pupils are included in the calculations above, using their data stored in Sonar Tracker.
Cohort
Pupils take the Phonics Check in Year 1. Where a pupil does not achieve a pass, they can re-take the test in Year 2. Pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 of the current academic year are considered in this cohort.
- Year 1 pupils will only have a result in the Year 1 check.
- Year 2 pupils will only have a result in the Year 2 check if they did not achieve a pass (normally 32 marks) in Year 1.
Eligible pupils
- For Phonics Year 1, the cohort figure is calculated using the number of Year 1 pupils (not Leavers) who have any assessment data (numerical or alphabetical) recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year 1.
- For Phonics Year 2 (retakes), the cohort figure is calculated using the number of Year 2 pupils (not Leavers) who have any assessment data (numerical or alphabetical) recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year 2.
- For Phonics End of KS1, the cohort figure is calculated using the number of Year 2 pupils (not Leavers) who have any assessment recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year 1, plus any pupils who have a result recorded in Sonar Tracker for the Phonics Check in Year 2. Where a pupil has a result recorded in both years, the Year 2 result is used.
Not eligible pupils
Year 1:
- A Year 1 pupil with no assessment result recorded for Year 1 Phonics.
Year 2:
- A Year 2 pupil with no result in the Year 2 check recorded, but who achieved a pass last academic year in Year 1.
- A Year 2 pupil with no result in the Year 2 check recorded, but who had a result last academic year in Year 1 that was not a pass.
- A Year 2 pupil with no result in the Year 2 check recorded and no result in last academic year's Year 1 test.
Example
There are 30 pupils (not Leavers) in Year 1 and 30 pupils (not Leavers) in Year 2 in Sonar Tracker:
- 29 Year 1 pupils have a result in Year 1 Phonics.
- 1 Year 1 pupil has no result in Year 1 Phonics.
- 8 Year 2 pupils have a result in Year 2 Phonics.
- 20 Year 2 pupils have no result in Year 2 Phonics and a standard pass in Year 1 Phonics.
- 1 Year 2 pupil has no result in Year 2 Phonics and a result of 15 in their Year 1 Phonics.
- 1 Year 2 pupil has no result in either Year 1 or Year 2 Phonics.
Calculation
- For Phonics Year 1, the denominator is 29.
- For Phonics Year 2 (retakes), the denominator is 8.
- For Phonics End of KS1 (Year 2 combined with those who passed when they were in Year 1), the denominator is 29. This is because it includes the 20 pupils who passed the previous academic year and the 8 pupils who retook this academic year. It does not include the pupil with no result in either Year 1 or Year 2.
| Year 1 |
Year 2 (Year 2) |
Year 2 (Year 1 + Year 2) |

| Pupils in cohort | 30 | 30 | 30 |
| Eligible | 29 | 8 | 29 |
| Ineligible | 1 | 22 | 1 |
Multiplication Tables Check data eligibility rules
Cohort
Year 4 pupils of the current academic year.
Eligible pupils
The Multiplication Tables Check - Average Score is calculated using the number of pupils (not Leavers) who have a value recorded for MTC assessment in Sonar Tracker:
- Where a pupil sat the check, they will have a score between 0 and 25 (inclusive).
- Where a pupil did not take the check, a different value will have been recorded. This is the exception, rather than the norm. These values are:
- A - Absent.
- B - Working below expectation.
- J - Just arrived in the school.
- L - Left.
- H - Pupil was cheating. This code must not be entered by schools, but it is an allowable value that may be imported.
- Q - Maladministration. This code must not be entered by schools, but it is an allowable value that may be imported.
- U - Unable to access test.
- NAA - Not able to administer.
- X - Check not taken and no reason given.
Not eligible pupils
A pupil with no result recorded against their record in Sonar Tracker.
Example
- There are 30 pupils (not Leavers) in Year 4 in Sonar Tracker.
- 29 pupils have a result recorded for the Multiplication Tables Check.
- 1 pupil has no result recorded.
Calculation
- For the Multiplication Tables Check - Average Score, the average is calculated by dividing the sum of all 29 pupil outcomes by 29.
- Total number of pupils in cohort = 30.
- Total number of eligible pupils = 29.
- Total number of ineligible pupils = 1.
