Sonar Multi-School
Purpose
The Early Years Attainment Overview report gives you a snapshot of EYFS attainment across your Trust for the current assessment period, using summative assessment data. Use it to compare attainment across different pupil groups, identify where support interventions could help, and spot opportunities to share best practice.
The report loads with a chart and table showing how many pupils are achieving Below, At, or Above ARE for Combined (All Goals), grouped by school. You can change the subject and group to analyse Combined (GLD) or individual subjects across these groups:
- By Year
- By Gender
- By Disadvantaged
- By SEN
- By Ethnicity
By default, attainment uses the Simple view (Below, At, or Above ARE). If all schools in your Trust use the same summative assessment model, you can switch to the School view for a more detailed breakdown.
This report is only available to users who are part of a multi-school establishment, for example, a Multi Academy Trust, and have the appropriate permissions on their account.
Only pupils with assessment data are included in calculations. For example, if 50 pupils are on roll but only 46 have assessment records, all counts and percentages are based on those 46 pupils.

Elements
| Field name | Description |
| Last updated | The date when the data you are viewing was last updated. |
| Term / Academic Year | The term, for example, Spring, and academic year, for example, 2023/2024, for which the data is displayed. |
| Group | Attainment details based on summative pupil assessment for the selected group. Groups are sorted alphabetically in the tabular view, with All Pupils at the top. All Pupils refers to the attainment of all pupils across your Trust who have assessment data and are included in the calculations. Pupils with missing assessment data are not included. |
| Attainment breakdown |
The Attainment Breakdown shows pupil achievement for the selected subject and group, based on the current Assessment Period. The ARE assessment categories are presented in both a chart and a table. By default, attainment is broken down into three categories: Below, At, and Above (but may differ based on how your Trust chooses to report attainment). In the chart view, both the number of pupils and a percentage are presented for each attainment category. Pupils without assessment data are not included in the percentage calculation. Different colours are used for the three assessment categories:
In the table view, the number of pupils assessed at Below, At, or Above are shown in three columns. When the Combined measures are calculated (for both All Goals or GLD), the lowest ARE across the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) determines the overall Summative Assessment. When calculating Combined (GLD) for each pupil:
The same principle applies when calculating Combined (All Goals) for each pupil:
Where a school is not using ELGs to record non-statutory Summative Assessment, but instead is capturing pupil attainment using Aspects, the same principle applies - the lowest ARE across the set of Aspects determines the overall Summative Assessment. If all schools within your Trust are using the same Summative Assessment Model for recording ARE, for example, one that is more detailed than the default Below, At, or Above ARE (referred to as Simple), you can choose to use this to display attainment with a greater level of granularity. Select School in the Age Related Expectations control to do this. If there is any inconsistency in the Summative Assessment Model used across your schools (even if only one school uses different Summative Codes), Simple will be used and you will not be able to select School. |
| % At and Above - All Pupils |
The percentage of pupils across your Trust whose Summative Assessment for the selected subject, for the current Assessment Period, is either At or Above ARE, calculated as follows:
The percentage is calculated only based on pupils who have assessment data. Pupils without assessment data are not included in the calculation. |
| % At and Above - Group |
The percentage of pupils in the group whose Summative Assessment for the selected subject and group, for the current Assessment Period, is either At or Above ARE, calculated as follows:
The percentage is calculated only based on pupils who have assessment data. Pupils without assessment data are not included in the calculation. |
| Total pupils | The total number of pupils included in the group. |
Controls
| Control | Description |
| By School | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data by school (the default view). Use this view to compare pupil attainment within individual schools over time, against other schools, and against your Trust average. Analyse the data to determine which schools are performing well over time, which are performing better or to a lower standard than others, and which may require support to improve attainment. Where applicable, you can build on the best practices of better performing schools to help improve those that are not performing as well. |
| By Year Group | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data by year group. Use this view to compare how pupils within individual year groups are performing over time, against each other, and against your Trust average. Analyse the data to determine which year groups are performing well over time, which are performing better or to a lower standard than others at different points, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
| By Gender | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data by gender. Use this view to compare how Female and Male pupils are performing over time, against each other, and against your Trust average regardless of gender. Analyse the data to determine how pupils of a certain gender are performing over time, which gender is performing best or to a lower standard, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
| By SEN | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data based on whether pupils are categorised as SEN or Not SEN. Use this view to compare how those that are and are not categorised as SEN are performing over time, against each other, and against your Trust average regardless of SEN status. Analyse the data to determine how SEN and Not SEN pupils are performing over time, which group is performing best or to a lower standard, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
| By Disadvantaged | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data based on whether pupils are categorised as Disadvantaged or Not Disadvantaged. Use this view to compare how those that are and are not categorised as Disadvantaged are performing over time, against each other, and against your Trust average regardless of disadvantaged status. Analyse the data to determine how Disadvantaged and Not Disadvantaged pupils are performing over time, which group is performing best or to a lower standard, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
| By Ethnicity | Select to view your Trust's EYFS pupil attainment data by ethnicity for the subject or combined subject measures. Use this view to compare how individual ethnic groups are performing against each other across your Trust over time. Analyse the data to determine how pupils of different ethnic groups are performing over time, which group is performing best or to a lower standard than others, and which may require support to improve attainment. |
| Filters | Filter the schools and pupils included in your report. See Sonar Multi-School: Filters for further information. |
| Assessment Period | Select an Assessment Period from those available. By default, the current Assessment Period is displayed. |
| Subject filter (where the school is using ELGs to record non-statutory summative attainment) |
Select the subject you want to create a report for across your Trust: You can choose either a combined subject or an individual subject:
By default, this value is set to Combined (All Goals). You can only have one subject selected at any time. In the exceptional case where you have EYFS pupils studying Primary Subjects who have been assessed against the Primary Curriculum and have assessment grades recorded against Primary Subjects, the Subject Filter will also include the Primary Subjects in addition to the EYFS Subjects. Only Primary Subjects where grades have been recorded are displayed, not all Primary Subjects. |
| Subject filter (where the school is using Aspects to record non-statutory summative attainment) |
Where a school is not using ELGs to record non-statutory Summative Assessment, but instead is capturing pupil attainment using Aspects, aspects will be available for selection instead of ELGs. Select the subject you want to create a report for across your Trust. You can choose either a combined subject or an individual subject:
By default, this value is set to Combined (All Goals). You can only have one subject selected at any time. |
| Age Related Expectations |
Select the Age Related Expectations code used to present your Trust's summative assessment data:
School is only available where all schools within your Trust use the same Summative Codes to record Summative Assessment. If there is any inconsistency in the Summative Codes used across your schools (even if only one school uses different Summative Codes), you will not be able to select School. |
| Export as CSV |
Select to download a CSV version of the data presented in the report table to the Downloads folder on your device. The content exported is only the data shown in the current view - it does not include data from other views. The CSV file can be opened for viewing and manipulation, for example, to calculate percentages, using an application such as Microsoft Excel. |
